Leading Rotorua food and beverage company Capers Epicurean has pushed the “go” button on online food orders.
The Mud earlier reported the company had started to examine ways to move into deliveries in response to the COVID-19 lockdown to overcome the dramatic closure of its outlets and the drop in business.
Gregg Brown, the owner and operator of the Pig & Whistle Historic Pub and Capers Epicurean, told The Mud the new Capers Online web site went live on Saturday morning (18 April 2020).
The company was fortunate in having an industrial kitchen off-site so that it could help meet the criteria demanded by government regulations around food deliveries during the Level 4 lockdown.
“It was then we realised that we could move into doing food boxes.”
Restrictions on food sales are likely to remain for some time even if the level of the lockdown changes.
Gregg Brown also said the company had also been looking at options for delivery as a natural development in meeting the demand for new ways of operating business in the 2020s.
However, the development of online operations in a short-time period was costly. The company employed a dedicated web designer to help manage and promote its offerings and deliveries professionally. Some initial hitches occurred, and changes were needed, as expected in any new operation.
The company had substantial upfront costs in developing Capers Online, but it would avoid the commissions of about 30 per cent asked by some food delivery companies.
The site offers a range of products available for ordering online, with an option for extras able to be added to the main order.
